I henhold til den økologiske teorien om persepsjon utvikles perseptuelle ferdigheter derimot gjennom progressiv differensiering en organisme blir mer og mer sensitiv overfor distinksjoner som allerede ligger som et potensial i omgivelsene.

Et spedbarn som i utgangspunktet kan gjøre få distinksjoner utforsker oppdagelser av nye distinksjoner eller nyanser, som igjen fører til stadig nye oppdagelser. Of Imperialism. I Clarkes bok kan man også se et nokså utydelig illustrasjonsbilde, der man først ser en masse forskjellige større og mindre sorte flekker mot en hvit bakgrunn (ibid.: 33). 5 Motives Of Imperialism. Når man har sett på det i noen sekunder trer imidlertid noen strukturer frem, og man kan få øye på noe som ser ut som en dalmatinerhund.
